Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs were made to endure a frustrating afternoon as Polokwane City rallied from behind to secure a 1-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
Chiefs claimed the lead through Daniel Cardoso's 15th-minute penalty, only for Polokwane to draw level just six minutes later when Walter Musona's tame shot from range somehow escaped the grasp of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi. And, despite dominating possession after the break, the visitors were unable to find the all-important breakthrough as Polokwane held on to claim a share of the spoils.
The first half started at a fairly cautious pace, with Chiefs seeing plenty of the ball early on but failing to put Rise and Shine under any real pressure.
However, the match sprang to life in the 14th minute after an impressive pass age of team play resulted in a penalty for the visitors on 15 minutes. a Cross from out wide was sent into the danger area where it struck the arm of a Polokwane defender, leaving the referee with no other option but to point to the spot.
Daniel Cardoso stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick and made no mistake, sending City keeper George Chigova the wrong way to give Amakhosi an early lead.
However, Chiefs' lead didn't last long as Polokwane went on to draw level in the 21st minute, following a howler from keeper Daniel Akpeyi. Walter Musona let fly with a speculative shot from range, and Akpeyi misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing it to squirm under his body and roll over the line.
Chiefs had a good opportunity to reclaim the lead just after the half-hour mark, but Bernard Parker headed well wide under pressure from the Polokwane defence.
City also had a chance for a second goal a few minutes later, the chance was squandered at the back post following a searching ball into the box from a corner kick.
The second half started much like the first, with Chiefs seeing most of the ball and City trying to catch them on the counter.
However, the final ball was sorely lacking on more than one occasion as Amakhosi struggled to turn their possession into meaningful chances.
Substitute Dumisani Zuma saw his close-range shot denied by a last-ditch block in the 72nd minute, before he forced Chigova into making a save from a headed effort on 85 minutes.
Teenage Hadebe had a chance to make himself the hero for Chiefs in the closing stages of the match, but he too was unable to find the mark with a header.
