Chiefs v SuperSport clash ends in stalemate

Cape Town - Bradley Grobler's late strike saw SuperSport United earn a 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday's Absa Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium.

Chiefs came into the match riding high on the back of two straight victories to kick off their new league campaign, and were looking odds on to make it three wins in a row following Samir Nurkovic's first half goal.

But Grobler's 83rd-minute strike saw SuperSport draw level, and only Daniel Akpeyi's last-minute intervention saved Amakhosi from going down in defeat.

While the draw ends Chiefs' winning run, a point was still enough to see them go top of the table on seven points, while SuperSport now occupy seventh spot with four points from their first three matches.

All eyes were on the returning Khama Billiat to the Chiefs starting line-up, but it was new arrival Nurkovic who gave them the lead in the 14th minute.

It was a bit of a lucky effort, to be fair, as the Serbian striker's cross took a nasty deflection off Grant Kekana and over Ronwen Williams into the SuperSport goal, but Chiefs were happy to take it.

The visitors nearly equalised through Grant Kekana 10 minutes later, but the defender's header cannoned off the crossbar despite getting the better of Akpeyi.

The second half saw Chiefs mostly content to sit back and protect their lead, with SuperSport controlling a lot of the possession but failing to make it count.

Chiefs nearly got a second goal on the counter attack when Nurkovic teed up Billiat, whose effort missed the target by a matter of inches.

That miss would end up costing Amakhosi dear, as Grobler struck seven minutes from time courtesy of a smart finish from close range.

And disaster very nearly struck in the dying moments of the match when Matsatsantsa were awarded a penalty for handball, but Akpeyi guessed right and pulled off the save to rescue a point for his side and leave them sitting pretty on top of the table.
