Ekstein signs with Azerbaijani club Sabail FK

Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Hendrik Ekstein will join Azerbaijan side Sabail FK where he will link up with Ghanaian legend Michael Essien.

Ekstein had been a free agent since departing Azerbaijan Premier League rivals, Sabah FC last month. The 29-year-old scored four goals and made three assists in 13 appearances for Sabah.

Initially, it was reported that Ekstein ended his stint with Sabah so as to force a move back to the PSL. But now that speculation has come to an end after the attacking midfielder parted ways with former agent Agent Palesa Mkhize and decided to join another club in the same country.

"Henrik Ekstein - welcome to Sabail. Welcome Pule Ekstein," a club statement read.

'Pule' will have the opportunity to play with a true great of the game - Michael Essien - who has enjoyed huge success in his career, most notably with Chelsea and Ghana.

Sabail are sitting rock-bottom of the Azerbaijani Premier League, having secured a third-placed finish last season, and will be looking to Ekstein to turn around their fortunes this campaign.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
