Fernandez has sympathy for Sandilands

Cape Town - Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez sympathises with Wayne Sandilands following his error against Highlands Park.

The veteran shot-stopper made a glaring mistake in the contest as he allowed Gladwin Shitolo's back-pass to roll under his foot and into the back of the net.

As such, he was subsequently replaced by Siyabonga Mpontshane and has not been in the starting line-up since.

With there being plenty of competition for the starting berth as Jackson Mabokgwane and Brilliant Khuzwayo are also in the goalkeeping ranks, Fernandez believes it is a tough situation.

"As a goalkeeper it's difficult because now you're all fighting for one place to play between four guys, who can all play as number one's anywhere in the league,” he told KickOff website.

"What you get is one happy keeper, one not-so-happy keeper because he's on the bench, and two unhappy keepers because they're not involved.

"It's not the ideal situation, and it's a selection headache of note for the coaches because they've got to choose the best one for the team."

On Sunday, Pirates travel to the Free State Stadium for an Absa Premiership clash against Bloemfontein Celtic.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
