Kaizer Chiefs striker puzzled by past failures

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic says he finds it difficult to comprehend that the Amakhosi finished in ninth place last season given how well they are playing this campaign.

Nurkovic arrived at Naturena at the beginning of the season with Chiefs at arguably their lowest ebb in years, having finished outside the top eight for the first time in 12 years, while losing in the Nedbank Cup final to NFD outfit TS Galaxy.

But now Chiefs are sitting pretty at the top of the log with Nurkovic having made a fantastic start to life in the PSL. The Serb striker is the leading scorer for the Glamour Boys this season and will be hoping to guide the Soweto giants to their first piece of major silverware in five years.

“We just need to continue with the same fighting spirit, to not look too much on the table because there’s still a lot of games to play,” said `Nurkovic.

“We just need to try and focus and take it one game at a time, and just do our best in every game and collect as many points as we can. It’s still 12 games to play, but I’m always optimistic.”

And the 28-year-old admits he is baffled as to how Chiefs struggled so much last season when he considers how well they are playing this campaign.

“There are good players at Chiefs – wonderful players, and personally for me it wasn’t tough to adapt to playing with them,” added Nurkovic.

“So, I really don’t know how they ended on the ninth place [last season], because there are such good players and I don’t really want to know what happened in the past years.

“We’re now in the present and all we have to do is focus on this season and try to end it in the best way possible.”
