Maritzburg in pole position after two playoff wins

Cape Town - Maritzburg United took a big step towards securing their Absa Premiership safety on Wednesday after recording a hard-fought 2-0 victory over National First Division outfit Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

The result puts the Team of Choice at the top of the three-team table for the promotion-relegation playoffs, with Eric Tinkler's men having recorded a 1-0 win over Royal Eagles in their first game of the series.

After a goalless first period, the match sprang to life in the 69th minute when Judas Moseamedi headed home at the far post following a teasing cross from Deolin Mekoa.

Maritzburg didn't ease off after breaking the deadlock and doubled their advantage with eight minutes remaining, courtesy of midfielder Bongokuhle Hlongwane netting his first senior goal for the club after being teed up by Moseamedi.

Tinkler and his side will now cast their attention towards their clash with Royal Eagles at Chatsworth Stadium on 29 May, with their final playoff game coming against TT Madzivhandila at Harry Gwala Stadium on 1 June.
