Mhango almost signed for Kaizer Chiefs, says Mabedi

Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Patrick Mabedi has revealed how he tried to bring countryman and current Orlando Pirates star Gabadinho Mhango to the Amakhosi.

Mhango has hit the back of the net twice in the two most recent Soweto derbies against Chiefs and also scored the winner for Malawi against South Sudan in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on Wednesday.

Mabedi, who also served as an assistant coach at Amakhosi, organised Mhango's move to South Africa when he first joined Bloemfontein Celtic.

In quotes published on KickOff, Mabedi said: "I know him better than anyone else because I am the one who brought him here to South Africa.

"I brought him to (Bloemfontein) Celtic, he started his career at Celtic. He was staying by my house and I even paid his tickets and everything from Malawi to come to this side."

Mabedi then went on to say that he spoke to Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung and his son Bobby Motaung about bringing the player to the Glamour Boys, but the move failed to materialise.

The former Kaizer Chiefs skipper explained: "And even those days my aim was to bring him to Chiefs, but unfortunately you know you can't go to Chiefs in those moments when you haven't made a name anywhere, and there are doubts about it.

"That was my wish (for him), to play at Chiefs for the first time, but it was not easy because you must remember, Chiefs those days, they had very good quality players and you had to go there with a big brand you know, that you've done something out there.

"In those days I spoke to the chairman, even Bobby and they are aware of that. But unfortunately, like I said it's not easy my man just to go to Chiefs, you have to go and do something."
