Middendorp starts life at Chiefs with stern SuperSport United test

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs will host SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership fixture on Wednesday at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

According to the club’s official website, matches between Amakhosi and Matsatsantsa always draw attention and this one will be no exception.

Already this season, SuperSport eliminated the Soweto giants in the MTN8 semi-final.

However, the Glamour Boys turned the tables by defeating the Pretoria-side in the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals.

Chiefs will be under the guidance of their new coach Ernst Middendorp, who has replaced Giovanni Solinas.

This is the German mentor’s second stint with the Soweto giants and has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United coach admits that he has desires of changing the fortunes of the club by bring in silverware during his tutelage.

"No one is happy with where the club is at. Not picking up a trophy for three seasons is not something that can be seen as normal for a club like Chiefs," said Middendorp.

"The plan is to challenge for what is left this season. There are 16 games to go in the league, there are also the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Confederation Cup to focus on."

The 60-year-old added: "There are certain players I’ve worked with and I know some from working in the PSL.

"Knowing the players, the PSL environment and the team will help in getting the team to play the brand of football we need to win."

Kick-off is at 19:30.
