PSL release statement on R50m sponsorship saga

Cape Town - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has released a statement on its decision to seek legal action against the South African Football Association (SAFA), while confirming the suspension of Black Leopards owner David Thidiela.

PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza announced that they intend to take legal action against a recently announced partnership between SAFA and OUTsurance.

Black Leopards owner Thidiela finds himself in hot water over threats made to a match official after a 1-0 loss to Bloem Celtic.

PSL Statement following Board of Governor’s Meeting:

The National Soccer League (NSL) Board of Governors met in Kempton Park on September 20.

The Board of Governors discussed, among other matters, the implications of the sponsorship agreement entered into between SAFA and OUTsurance to sponsor match officials.

The NSL is of the view that the sponsorship infringes on the rights of NSL sponsors. The Board of Governors mandated the Executive Committee to seek legal advice on the matter and to take all steps as may be necessary to resolve the matter.

The Board of Governors also discussed the matter relating to the alleged utterances which appear to have been made by Black Leopards FC chairperson, David Thidiela.

The Board of Governors referred the matter to the League’s prosecutor Nande Becker for urgent attention.

In the interim the Board of Governors resolved to place Thidiela on precautionary suspension from the PSL Executive Committee until the matter is resolved.
