Sundowns expecting Sirino to light up Absa Prem

Cape Town - He's not quite firing on all cylinders yet, but Mamelodi Sundowns are confident that new signing Gaston Sirino will soon be lighting up the league.

The Uruguay-born Sirino, a January signing by the Brazilians, gave a nice little cameo of what he can bring to Sundowns after coming off the bench during Friday's 1-0 Nedbank Cup last 32 win over Cape Town All Stars.

Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi feels, however, that there is a whole lot more to come from the South American attacker, which will take some of the load off 'Downs' other forwards.

"We know what he is capable of, but I don't think he has shown what he is really capable of. Maybe his condition physically is not yet at the right level," Mngqithi said.

"But we believed that when we play a player like him in the number 10 position it would take away some of the stress from Percy (Tau) because now the focus will be on Jeremy (Brockie), and Sirino and Percy would find more freedom to operate.

"And immediately it happened and they (All Stars) started focusing on Sirino and Brockie and that’s where we got our first goal (through Tau).

"From what we know and what we have seen, I don't think we have seen enough of that boy. He has got far more to give. His defensive play is still questionable, but we believe because we know what he is capable of. It is only a matter of time."

Masadawana's next Absa Premiership clash is at home to Free State Stars on February 21 at Loftus Versveld Stadium.

Kick-off is at 19:30.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
