SuperSport, CT City entertain in thrilling draw

Cape Town - SuperSport United and Cape Town City could not be separated as they played to a 3-3 draw in a thrilling encounter at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday evening.

Aubrey Modiba swung the ball in to the box from the right-hand side and Bradley Grobler chested the ball in to the path of Sipho Mbule, who produced a delightful left-footed volley in to the top right-hand corner.

City equalised four minutes later. Kermit Erasmus was played in down the right-hand side and played the ball in to the box in to the feet of Thabo Nodada, who was given far too much time and space by the SuperSport defence before expertly finding the bottom right-hand corner with a beautiful finish.

Four minutes after levelling matters, the visitors came agonisingly close to taking the lead when Thamsanqa Mkhize's header rattled the upright after the Bafana Bafana right-back found himself unmarked in the box to meet a corner taken by Mpho Makola.

City were dominating possession and pressing the hosts back in their own half, who were content to soak up possession and spring on the counter-attack whenever the opportunity presented itself.

The visitors were playing some lovely football and were rewarded with their second in the 18th minute. Bradley Ralani delivered an inch-perfect cross from the left-hand side after a flowing counter-attack to an unmarked Erasmus, who headed home clinically in to the bottom left-hand corner.

It was a hugely entertaining spectacle and the topsy-turvy nature of the match continued with Matsatsantsa equalising in the 22nd minute. Jamie Webber won the ball back in midfield and played the ball towards Bradley Grobler on the left-hand side of the box with City centre-back Keanu Cupido kicking clean air in an attempt to clear, with the league's top-scorer putting the ball through City goalkeeper Peter Leuuwenburgh's legs and in to the back of the net.

Five minutes before the interval, Webber did superbly to work the ball in to the box to Grobler, who curled just wide of the left-hand upright.

Eight minutes after the break, Craig Martin played in Mkhize down the right-hand side

Soon after, City took the lead. Nodada dispossessed Grobler just outside the SuperSport box when the striker should have just cleared his lines. The City midfielder surged in to the box and curled a sublime finish in to the left-hand corner from the left-hand side of the box.

The game continued to set the pulse racing as Thamsanqa Gabuza made it 3-3. The former Orlando Pirates marksman received the ball in the box from a long throw with his back to goal and rolled Abubaker Mobara before firing an unstoppable left-footed volley in to the right-hand corner from an acute angle.

Soon after, Clayton Daniels forced Leeuwenburgh in to tipping the ball over the bar with a header from a free-kick before Grobler almost beat the City shot-stopper at his near post with a stinging left-footed drive from a tight angle as Matsatsantsa pushed forward in search of all three points.

The Citizens responded when Mkhize headed narrowly over from Erasmus' cross before Ralani fired straight at Ronwen Williams with five minutes to go but in the end, the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils as an action-packed tie came to an end.
