SuperSport send Chiefs packing

Durban - SuperSport United buried one of the few chances that came their way to secure a 1-0 MTN8 quarter-final victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

As it happened: Kaizer Chiefs 0-1 SuperSport United

A promising start by Amakhosi was negated when SuperSport counter-attacked with blistering effect after five minutes, Bradley Grobler releasing Jeremy Brockie who did well to make space for his shot before beating Itumeleng Khune with a powerful shot.

Chiefs came back looking for the equaliser and went close halfway through the stanza when Siphiwe Tshabalala’s drive deflected off Dean Furman before striking the upright.

Matsatsantsa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams became increasingly involved around the 30 minute mark and he bravely blocked at the feet of Gustavo Paez, before brilliantly tipping Bernard Parker's thunderous strike over goal.

Chiefs kept the pressure on SuperSport in the final minutes of the half, but the Pretoria-based team showed commitment in defence to keep their lead intact.

SuperSport were close to doubling their lead six minutes into the second half when Grobler caught Khune out of his goal, but his attempted lob was cleared off the line by Erick Mathoho.

It was then Parker's turn to hit the woodwork for Steve Komphela's side when his glancing header on 53 minutes found the upright.

Incredibly, the crossbar was again to come to SuperSport’s rescue when Hendrick Ekstein's 76th minute shot bounced back into play.

Chiefs put everything on the line in trying to rescue the game and even had a late goal ruled out for off-sides as SuperSport held on to book their spot in the semi-finals.
