Cape Town - KwaZulu-Natal football giants AmaZulu find themselves in a rather precarious position once again, but they have not given up on their prospects of staying in the Absa Premiership at the end of the season.
Usuthu, which currently occupies 13th position in the Premiership standings, is only ahead of Chippa United on matches won. Chippa (which is in the relegation zone) and AmaZulu have accumulated just ten points during this campaign.
While the signs might be ominous, midfielder Samuel Darpoh insists there is still enough self-belief for the team to realise its objectives. Next on the agenda for AmaZulu is Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night. It goes without saying that maximum points will be required.
"We fight for each other. At training we are all happy, we are full of love, that has helped us move up," said Darpoh, reflecting on what had been a poor start to the 2018/19 campaign.
Bloemfontein Celtic, under the administration of the mighty Steve Komphela, has already produced an inspiring campaign. Technically Phunya Sele Sele can still win this league, as it finds itself just three points behind Orlando Pirates.
Usuthu has embraced the task that lies ahead though.
"That is what is inspiring us all the time. We had a tough run of results before we won two games in a row but that was not because we were not playing well," added Darpoh.
"We will never give up, we will never stop believing," added the Ghanaian.
Another redeeming feature of the AmaZulu campaign has been the fierce competition for places in the squad. It has not yielded the most positive of results just yet. However, the Usuthu midfielder is bullish about the immediate future.
"The competition in the team has been tough. Everyone who gets their chance makes the most of it and that is a positive thing for the team," he said.
On Bloemfontein Celtic, Darpoh said: "They are a good team. They play good football, they hold the ball and move it around. We have done well at home this season, this is going to be a good game."
