WATCH: I was so close to playing for Barcelona - 'Old John' Mabizela

Cape Town – Former Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela says that if it wasn’t for his drug and alcohol abuse he would have been playing for Spanish giants Barcelona.

The now retired 38-year-old Mabizela is an HIV/Aids councillor and spends most of his time giving advice to young people on how to avoid drug and alcohol abuse.

"The major stumbling block we face as players is drugs and alcohol abuse," he said.

"We are at war with drugs and alcohol and we can’t run away from that.

"I often like to emphasise it - alcohol holds a spec in life - it makes you lose focus."

He added: "It also affects your family as well. We really have a big problem."
