Wits preparing major squad overhaul in January

Cape Town - The January transfer window could be a busy one for Absa Premiership side Bidvest Wits who are reportedly set for a major squad overhaul.

According to a report by The Citizen, head coach Gavin Hunt will release a number of fringe players to make room for new signings to galvanize his squad.

Veteran forward, Elias Pelembe is set to be released alongside left-back Lehlohonolo Nonyane and centre-back Joseph Douhadji. With Douhadji failing to make a single league appearance - despite having joined at the start of the season.

"They will either loan him out to get game time or they will release him if no club is willing to take him. As for Nonyane, he is definitely on his way out," a source close to Wits said.

"Coach Gavin is looking to add a couple of players in January to beef up his squad, so Wits have to release some players to make way for the new signings.”

Hunt has shown a merciless streak having already shown Fagrie Lakay and Prince Nxumalo the door, who also failed to make a single appearance.

The Students are believed to be undergoing a restructuring period with players being told that they would be allowed to leave if the right offer was made.

Despite being second in the standings, Sport24 understands that the morale of the squad is low with Hunt's overly harsh criticism and negativity leading players to question their futures at the club.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
