Late flurry of goals sees Chiefs overcome The Magic

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs were pushed all the way by The Magic in their Nedbank Cup round of 16 clash as three goals in extra time secured 3-0 victory at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

As it happened: The Magic v Kaizer Chiefs

After a goalless opening 90 minutes, Chiefs finally opened their account through Daniel Cardoso's penalty in the dying moments of the first half of extra time, before Philani Zulu and Khama Billiat added their names to the scoresheet after the break.

The first half was a closely contested affair, with neither of the sides able to create very many clear-cut chances.

Chiefs did create the better chances, though, and with a bit of luck they would have gone into the half-time break with a slender advantage.

However, Happy Mashiane fired narrowly wide in the 4th minute after letting fly with a speculative shot from range, while George Maluleka also failed to find the mark with a long-range effort in the 13th minute.

Their best chance of the half came in the 21st minute with Ryan Moon bearing down on goal, but the forward's drilled effort struck the post and was quickly snapped up by goalkeeper Bulelani Cola.

Despite showing minimal attacking threat in the first half, the Magic did well to frustrate Amakhosi and keep the scores locked a at 0-0.

And, it was more of the same after the break as Chiefs piled forward in numbers, forcing the Magic to sit back and soak up the pressure for extended periods of play.

After a brief lull in play in which various players received treatment for their knocks and ailments, Magic finally started making forays forward and very nearly bragged the lead against the run of play, only for Bruce Bvuma to come to the rescue for Chiefs.

Chiefs hit back by creating two chances of their own, Bernard Parker forcing a good save from Cola in the 64th minute before Billiat's strong shot was saved by Magic's keeper.

The visitors continued to create good opportunities but lady luck was not on their side. Leonardo Castro somehow failed to score in the 75th minute, shooting wide from inside the box, before Teenage Hadebe fired wide from a corner to let the Magic off the hook once more.

But with no goals to show for their efforts in 90 minutes of play, the match went to extra time.

Chiefs redoubled their efforts as they went in search of the opening goal, and they went agonisingly close as Khama Billiat saw his shot cleared off the line.

Amakhosi finally got the breakthrough they were looking for when Billiat was brought down in the box in the 107th minute, and Cardoso made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick.

And the result was put beyond any doubt in the second half of extra time, Philani Zulu tapping in from close range following some good work in the build up by Zuma, before Billiat got in on the act with a drilled shot into the back of the net from yet another Zuma cross.
