Cape Town - Bidvest Wits cruised through to the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 after recording a comfortable 4-0 victory over minnows Boyne Tigers at a rain-swept Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Clever Boys were knocked out at the first hurdle in last season's competition and went into the midweek encounter looking to avoid another upset.
Wits made the kind of start coach Gavin Hunt would have been hoping for, breaking the deadlock after just 11 minutes as Haashim Domingo tapped in from close range after being teed up by Simon Murray.
Murray again provided the assist just three minutes later as Domingo converted from close range, this time firing a right-footed effort into the bottom-right corner from the Scotsman's cross.
The hosts showed no signs of letting up, even after forging an early two-goal advantage, and they stretched further ahead on the 20-minute mark as Murray turned goalscorer. The striker latched onto a pass from Daylon Claasen before skipping past two challenges and firing into the back of the net.
And, the match was effectively over as a contest as Wits went on to net their fourth of the evening on 38 minutes, Murray combining well with Gabadinho Mhango before notching his second of the night with a tap-in at the back post.
While Wits had shown their ruthless side in the first half, it was a different story after the half-time break as they took their foot off the gas.
However, they could have very easily bagged a fifth in the closing stages of the contest as Mhango somehow failed to hit the target with a header from close range.
