THERE has been widespread public outcry over food sold at kasi spaza shops, with some of the food items bought from these shops resulting in deaths.

Several children died, with others taken to hospitals after eating food from kasi spaza shops. And after several protests and looting, the police and Ekurhuleni Environmental Health Department are now taking action to put an end to this.

On Thursday, 11 April, during Operation Shanela, about four spaza shops were shut down in Tsakani.

Ekurhuleni district police deputy commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, said the spaza shops were found to be non-compliant.

"Some were found to be operating, but without proper documentation and were closed down," said Brigadier Machakela.

He said food items from these shops were also examined to ensure dates had not expired.

Machakela said besides visiting spaza shops, police arrested a number of suspects for various crimes and about 208 suspects are to face the law.

In this number, certain suspects were arrested for murder, GBV, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and other contact crimes.

"Our detectives, who have been working since Wednesday, 10 April, brought 17 wanted suspects to book," he said.

He said the Piva system was also used to trace suspects wanted outside Ekurhuleni, and 202 people had their fingerprints checked to determine their status.
