The BMW 7 Series has claimed the 2024 SA Car of the Year title. But why has an R2.2 million car been glorified when our current economy is in a shambles, asks News24 Motoring editor Janine van der Post as she explains how things work.

I've been a South African Car of the Year (CoTY) judge or jury member for more years than I can recall, leaning towards 15 years, if not more. Earlier this year, voting for the semi-finalists and finalists came around, and I made my appropriate picks. However, due to logistics, which clashed with the testing days of this year's competition, I found it best to withdraw for this round, and I have not been privy to any in-house discussions or if the voting criteria have changed.
