David Bedingham laid a magnificent platform, but it was frittered away by a late collapse that allowed New Zealand to stay in a Test that at some point, was moving away from them at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Thursday.
Bedingham's maiden Test century allowed South Africa to post a competitive 235 and also ensured New Zealand has to chase a ground-record fourth innings target and the game's highest score.
