In the end, Shukri Conrad's makeshift Proteas couldn't quite conjure up a remarkable turnaround - which actually would've bordered on a miracle - in the second Test against New Zealand in Hamilton on Friday.

Instead, a familiar foe proved impenetrable as the hosts glided to a seven-wicket victory and a historic 2-0 series whitewash (it's the hosts' first ever Test series triumph over South Africa) that, at least in the context of a closely contested first three days of this match, feels somewhat unfair.

New Zealand's No 3 batsman, Kane Williamson, has been at his relentless, classy best in this skirmish and ended it with magnificent, unbeaten 133 - his third century in the four innings he played in the series.
