In another international realm, Ruan de Swardt and the bulk of his teammates shouldn't be anywhere near Test cricket, not even running water.

And yet, here we are. On the evidence of their stodgy, irritating but effective stay at the crease on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, where 220 runs were made over the funereal stretch of 89 overs, a full day of Test match cricket was batted out.
