It took six days of play in this seemingly lopsided and contentious red-ball series to do so, but the Proteas belatedly "won" a day of cricket against New Zealand as they took a morale-boosting 31-run lead on the second day of the second Test in Hamilton.

For that, they have two Danes, Piedt and Paterson, to thank as the pair of stalwarts shared eight wickets between each other, suddenly putting Shukri Conrad's much-maligned charges in a surprisingly favourable position to effect an extraordinary turnaround after their pasting in the opening match.
