Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt's purple patch in the ongoing home ODI series against Sri Lanka has given some credence to expectations that she is destined to set a few benchmarks in women's cricket.
In the Proteas' seven-wicket victory over the Islanders in the second ODI in Kimberley on Saturday, Wolvaardt, in an uncharacteristically gritty rather than graceful innings, carried her bat for a sixth ODI century as she went about scoring 110 off 141 balls, which included six fours.
Her exploits resulted in overtaking Australia's Ellyse Perry as the fifth-ranked women's batter in the ICC's ODI rankings.
