  • American Justin Thomas came from behind to clinch a stunning playoff win and claim his second PGA Championship title at Southern Hills Country Club.
  • Only four of the 11 South Africans in the major field made the weekend, with Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel finishing tied for 60th.
  • Oosthuizen made headlines as he was reported as the highest-ranked golfer to participate in the controversial Saudi-back LIV Golf Invitational.

The South African contingent struggled at this past weekend's PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Only four of the 11 South African golfers made the weekend cut in this year's second major.

The drastic change in the weather made an already difficult golf course in Tulsa tougher to play.

SA's top-ranked golfer Louis Oosthuizen finished T60 alongside 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel on nine-over. The duo took home $26 125 (R413 055) each for their efforts.

Despite making the weekend cut, Oosthuizen slipped from 15th to 18th on the world golf rankings as Justin Thomas came from behind to win his second PGA Championship title.

Justin Harding wound up in a tie for 71 along with Shaun Norris on 12-over and the South African duo earned $24 250 (R383 410) each.

Oosthuizen made headlines for other reasons at Southern Hills this past weekend as it was confirmed that the 39-year-old signed up for the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational series.

Oosthuizen will be the highest-ranked golfer to sign up for the opening $25-million, 54-hole LIV Golf event at Centurion Club in St Albans, Hertfordshire from 9-11 June.

The PGA Tour has forbidden any of its players from playing in any of the LIV events, meaning that those who sign up will be defying the organisation and risk their membership.

Oosthuizen was reportedly dropped by one of his main sponsors, UPs and was spotted without the gold and yellow UPS logos on their clothing.
