While "confident" that it can address what the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) called "multiple non-conformities with the International Standard for Laboratories" within the six-month suspension imposed on it, it is uncertain whether the Bloemfontein-based South African Doping Control Laboratory (SADoCoL) actually has the means to deal with its shortcomings.
On Monday, WADA released a statement declaring that as of 1 March, SADoCoL - one of only 31 accredited anti-doping facilities in the world and the only one on the African continent - had had its accreditation suspended for said non-conformities and was prohibited from "carrying out anti-doping activities, including analyses of urine and blood samples".
WADA traced SADoCoL's troubles back to their having had an analytical testing restriction (ATR) imposed on the lab in September "as it related specifically to the Gas Chromatography/Combustion/Isotope Ratio Mass Spectometry (GC/C/IRMS) analytical method."
