Cape Town - The South African men's water polo side have held rivals New Zealand to a draw in the pool at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea on Wednesday.

The match finished 8-8 with the scores in each of the eight-minute quarters reading (SA scores first): 2-0, 2-2, 2-4 and 2-2.

The result represented a marked improvement for the SA side after they went down 23-3 to Spain in their tournament opener on Monday.

The SA men's side will conclude their group play against Hungary on Friday, July 19 at 01:30 SA time.

Hungary are currently top of Pool C having beaten New Zealand 24-4 and Spain 13-11.

At the last world championships in 2017, the SA men's side finished 16th - and last - in the tournament, scoring 21 goals in five matches and conceding a whopping 77.
