Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi's attraction as a player is that he is the spirit animal for the relentlessly abrasive manner in which the world champions play, but does that make him a captain elect? Simnikiwe Xabanisa investigates.

If there is one thing the docuseries Chasing the Sun - in its original form or the sequel - has consistently delivered on, it is showing its cult following as unvarnished a depiction of their beloved Springboks as possible.

One such example was the closing scene in the latest episode of the documentary, where Bongi Mbonambi escaped the team's on-field celebrations in the immediate aftermath of the Springboks' epic comeback in the semi-final against England to find a corner in the deserted dressing room in which he could break down and cry in relief.
