The captain of newly crowned Varsity Cup champions, the Eagles, is one of those players who is not just made for the Varsity Cup, but also the embodiment of what the tournament really is: the home of the late bloomer.

A burly 24-year-old tight-head from the Empangeni backwaters, Ruan 'Sampie' Swiegers, on Monday night became the 15th captain to lift the Varsity Cup when his North-West University Eagles side pipped the University of Cape Town's Ikeys 27-25 in an absorbing final in Potchefstroom.
