BAFANA BAFANA WIN BRONZE AND FINISH AFCON IN THIRD PLACE

Bafana Bafana clinched the bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by prevailing over DR Congo 6-5 in a penalty shootout.

Ahead of the match, Bafana head coach Hugo Broos downplayed its significance, suggesting it was merely a game for statistics that would likely be forgotten.

Still reeling from their devastating loss to Nigeria in the semi-finals via penalties, Bafana faced DR Congo, who had suffered a 1-0 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast.

Following a goalless 90 minutes, the match proceeded directly to a penalty shootout. Although Teboho Mokoena missed Bafana's first penalty, captain Ronwen Williams emerged as the hero once again by saving two penalties.

DR Congo clear the danger from the free-kick.
8'
Mvumpa pushes forward to the Bafana box but he fell into the offside trap.
10'
SAVED! Silas was through on goal, with just Williams to beat… the striker tried to go round the Bafana keeper, but Williams anticipated his move and flung himself at the ball, breaking it away from Silas' control. It bobbled away from him but Williams recovered immediately and threw himself on the ball. Magnificent keeping to save a certain goal.
14'
Banza is brought down in his own half and wins a free-kick.
15'
Sibisi is noted by the ref as the offender so he needs to keep his tackles clean enough to eat off from now on.
16'

30'

33'

37'
The free-kick fails to wake the headline-writers up from their slumber.

45'
HALF-TIME, SOUTH AFRICA 0-0 DR CONGO. DR Congo have shown plenty of fighting spirit, but the Bafana defence has been superb. Their attacking has also shown plenty of promise, but the final ball has lacked plenty at the moment. We should have plenty of sparkle in the second half… and we'll bring it to you in just a few minutes.

52'
WIDE! DR Congo again push… this time the thunderbolt shot on goal flashes over the crossbar
54'
DR Congo drive forward and Williams again has to cover his goal with some smart keeping.
58'

75'

76'
There's a scramble in the Bafana box, the ball falls to Mbemba in a great place to shoot on goal, but he rushes his effort and instead of lashing a shot on goal he awkwardly scoops the ball out for a goalkick. Very disappointing effort.
78'
SUBSTITUTION, DR CONGO. Mayele comes on in place of Silas Katompa Mvumpa, while Cédric Bakambu takes over from Simon Banza.
80'
Wissa presses forward but is flagged for offside.
82'

84'
Great ball out wide for Mokoena to run onto… he plays is inisde there a great one-two between Mayambela and Appollis… sending Mayambela down to the byline… two Bafana attackers are in the middle waiting for the cross… but instead he tries to crack it under Bertraud, but instead it deflects for a corner.
