Arsenal back on top after easy win at Brighton

Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League as goals from Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard added the gloss to another mature performance from the Gunners to beat Brighton 3-0 on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's men edge one point clear of Liverpool, who face Manchester United on Sunday, and champions Manchester City at the top of the table.

Saka opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Havertz slotted in his fifth goal in his last nine Arsenal games.

Leandro Trossard came off the bench to haunt his old club with a cool chip over Bart Verbruggen for the third five minutes from time.

Arteta could even afford the luxury of replacing Saka just after the hour mark in perfect preparation for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Brighton had not lost at home in 14 games in all competitions stretching back to September, but they had not met a side of Arsenal's class on that run.

They have now won 10 and draw one, away to Manchester City, of their last 11 league games to put themselves in position for a first Premier League title in 20 years.

Set-pieces have been a major weapon for Arsenal this season and the nearly led within seconds as Gabriel headed Martin Odegaard's inviting free-kick wide.

Saka was rested for Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Luton and should have marked his return with a goal before he broke the deadlock as the England international fired wide with just Verbruggen to beat.

The Dutch international goalkeeper then produced a stunning save to deny Gabriel Jesus and the Brazilian headed another good chance wide from Havertz's inviting cross.

But Arsenal's pressure finally found its reward on 33 minutes.

Jesus was tripped inside the area by Tariq Lamptey and the defender's protestations that he got a touch on the ball fell on deaf ears.

Saka took responsibility from the spot and sent Verbruggen the wrong way for his 17th goal of the season.

Arsenal have now kept five consecutive clean sheets on the road in the Premier League and were rarely threatened by an impotent Brighton attack.

Julio Enciso came closest to a response for the Seagulls with a curling effort from outside the box that David Raya did well to turn behind.

Arsenal were less threatening after the break but scored the all-important second goal when Jorginho got to the by-line and his cross was tapped in at the near post by Havertz.

The German international then turned provider for the third as he set Trossard galloping clear in behind the Brighton defence to score on his first return to the Amex since leaving for the Emirates in January 2023.

City were 4-2 winners over Crystal Palace earlier on Saturday and now the pressure is on Liverpool to respond to their title challengers when they return to Old Trafford seeking revenge.

Everton win relegation scrap, Villa draw

Everton went into their match against second-from-bottom Burnley desperately searching for a spark of inspiration after a run of 13 Premier League matches without a win.

They struggled to impose themselves but benefited from a huge error from visiting goalkeeper Arijanet Muric in first-half stoppage time.

Muric took too much time to clear the ball and when he did it was straight at Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the ball rebounding off the forward into the net.

The 1-0 win means Everton are now four points above the relegation zone.

But the club need everything they can get as they wait nervously to find out if they will be handed a second points deduction this season for breaking Premier League financial rules.

Fourth-placed Villa, beaten in midweek by City, will rue a second-half collapse that could prove costly in their chase to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Unai Emery's men drew 3-3 against Brentford but only after tossing away a 2-0 lead.

Villa led 2-0 moments into the second half after goals from Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rodgers but three goals in nine minutes from Mathias Jorgensen, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa turned the match on its head.

Watkins scored his second goal of the game in the 80th minute but Villa could not find a winner and they are just three points above fifth-placed Tottenham, who have two games in hand.

Carlton Morris scored a 90th-minute goal in Luton's 2-1 win against Bournemouth -- a result that leaves them in the relegation zone but now level on points with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle beat Fulham 1-0 courtesy of a late goal from Bruno Guimaraes to keep alive their hopes of European football next season while West Ham came from behind to beat Wolves 2-1.

De Bruyne inspires Man City comeback at Crystal Palace

Kevin De Bruyne brought up his century of goals for Manchester City by scoring twice in a 4-2 win at Crystal Palace that moved the champions level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool.

City had fallen behind after just three minutes at Selhurst Park, but De Bruyne led the response by curling in a beauty to equalise.

Rico Lewis put the visitors in front early in the second half before De Bruyne teed up Erling Haaland to end his goal drought.

And the Belgian rounded off a stunning display by smashing in his 100th City goal.

Pep Guardiola's decision to hand De Bruyne and Haaland the night off for Wednesday's 4-1 win over Aston Villa paid dividends as his side remain on course to defend the treble they won last season.

Just three days ahead of City's trip to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, Guardiola took the chance to shuffle his pack again.

Phil Foden, the hat-trick hero against Villa, was dropped to the bench alongside Manuel Akanji, Bernardo Silva and Jeremy Doku.

On paper, City did not appear to be weakened as John Stones and Oscar Bobb came in with De Bruyne and Haaland.

But it was an error from the ring-rusty Stones that gave Palace the perfect start after just three minutes.

Stones was making his return after being injured on England duty last month, but an errant pass was pounced on by Adam Wharton, who released Jean-Philippe Mateta to fire in off the post.

The goal awoke City from their slumber with De Bruyne at the heart of most of their most threatening attacks.

Only a brilliant save by Dean Henderson denied Rodri a quick reply.

But the visitors were level within 10 minutes of falling behind as De Bruyne curled in a stunning strike into the top corner.

Haaland had failed to score in his previous five games for club and country and failed to take advantage of a brilliant De Bruyne through ball as Henderson saved a one-on-one.

Palace, though, could also have been back in front before the break when Jordan Ayew smashed off the bar after a rare Rodri error.

There was little doubt over the outcome once Lewis pounced on some slack Palace defending from Jack Grealish's deflected cross to make it 2-1 on 47 minutes.

Grealish's season has been repeatedly disrupted by injury but his return to fitness and form could be a vital component in City's quest to retain the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

He was also involved in his side's third goal as Grealish picked out De Bruyne's, whose cross was touched in by Haaland for a much-needed goal for the Norwegian.

Haaland now has 30 for the season in all competitions but had failed to find the net in 12 of his previous 17 games on his return from a foot injury that kept him out for two months.

Having curled one in on his right foot, De Bruyne then blasted in a piledriver with his left to make it 100 goals in 372 games since joining City in 2015.

At that point City seemed set to win by the four-goal margin they needed to go above Liverpool on goal difference.

But it was Palace who got the sixth and final goal of the game when Odsonne Edouard turned in Jeffrey Schlupp's cross.

City move two points ahead of Arsenal, who can go top later on Saturday when they visit Brighton. - AFP

Hello and welcome to live coverage of Brighton vs Arsenal in the English Premier LEague. Kickoff is at 6.30pm SAST at the Amex Stadium.
1'
KICKOFF! We are underway on the South Coast.
2'
CHANCE! Arsenal nearly score just 65 seconds into the match. Odegaard's freekick from the left is met by Gabriel but he heads a yard wide with Verbruggen all at sea.
3'
Lovely football from Brighton to play through Arsenal's pressing. It's worked to Enciso on the left and he wins a corner off White.
4'
Gross delivers the corner for Brighton and Gabriel heads clear. Jorginho is down with a knock after grabbing at Van Hecke. The Seagulls defenders feels he was fouled.
6'
We have another stoppage as Havertz and Estupinan clash heads. The latter is down briefly but can continue.
9'
WIDE! Some more sizzling Brighton football from one half to the other. Lamptey is at the heart of it and runs down the line onto Adingra's pass before his low cross is fired over the bar by Enciso. The hosts have made a fine start here.
10'
Wide again! Moder is now the Brighton man to drag a shot wide of goal from distance. It all came from a cheap White giveaway and a lovely line-breaking pass from Van Hecke to Welbeck.
12'
CHANCE! White sends Saka running clear. He cuts inside but his shot goes wide of the far post. He was probably offside anyway.
13'
SAVE! What a top piece of goalkeeping by Verbruggen. Saka had teed up Jesus to curl a fine effort towards the top corner for the Gunners.
15'
Wide! Jesus meets a Havertz cross after a fine Jorginho ball over the top. Both sides are pushing for the all-important first goal.
17'
Another long shot from distance as Adingra cuts inside Zinchenko and fires wide.
21'
The Gunners come close again as Gabriel pokes a Saka inswinging corner wide. Gross was having a pull of the Arsenal defender's shirt.
24'
Slick Baleba and Welbeck touches lead to Adingra being sent down the right. He plays a searching through ball but Raya's starting position is excellent and he intercepts.
26'
VAR has a look at a possible penalty as Lamptey bursts into the area onto Welbeck's pass. Zinchenko and Raya do enough to put off the right back without committing an offence.
28'
We have a stoppage with Lamptey needing treatment. He may not be able to continue as his injury woes continue.
31'
PENALTY given to Arsenal! Play is switched out to Jesus on the left, he cuts inside Lamptey and has his legs taken out. Yes, Lamptey got a tiny flick on the ball but he took out the wide forward on the follow through.
33'
GOAL, ARSENAL, SAKA, 0-1! The Arsenal right winger steps forward and sidefoots the ball into the bottom left corner with the goalkeeper going the other way. Brighton 0-1 Arsenal.
36'
Arsenal have had 59% possession so far.
38'
White gets forward and wins a corner for Arsenal off Van Hecke. The delivery comes to nothing as Rice handles.
40'
Gabriel was caught by Welbeck and is having treatment. This is his 27th consecutive start alongside Saliba. Rice is covering at centre back for now.
43'
SAVE! Enciso cuts inside and curls a fine effort towards the far corner. Raya is off his line and not being the tallest, it takes him to be at full stretch to push it past the post. That reminded one of the Porto goal a few weeks back.
45'
HALF TIME. It's been a good half. Brighton started tremendously but didn't score or create anything clear. Arsenal took control after that but needed a 33rd minute penalty to break the deadlock. Will we see more goals in the second half? Join us in 15 minutes to find out. Brighton 0-1 Arsenal.
45'
+5' Arsenal brilliantly counter from one side to the other. Jesus finds Odegaard, who finds Havertz but the final ball is lacking.
45'
+3' Arsenal are camped in Brighton's defensive third. Havertz toes an effort across the face of goal and Van Hecke blocks a Saka effort at close quarters.
45'
Added time: seven minutes.
45'
White goes forward for Arteta's team but he crosses straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.
46'
KICKOFF! The second half is underway. No changes on either side.
48'
CHANCE! Havertz crosses to the back post where Jesus rises highest but he nods it wide of the post. There was a penalty shout for a Lamptey handball seconds earlier.
50'
Zinchenko concedes a corner. Gross goes over to the right to take it, it eventually falls for Estupinan, who has one air shot and then fires the next effort wide of the far post.
52'
Estupinan catches White off the wall with a push in the throat. That looked unprovoked but no action is taken.
54'
SAVE! Havertz tees up an Odegaard shot on his right. It's awkwardly saved by Verbruggen who just does enough.
57'
Enciso makes a run and wins a corner off Saka. There's loads of shoving in the area, delaying the restart. Gross eventually takes the Brighton corner, it's headed out to Enciso who volleys well wide.
59'
Both teams are warming up subs as the match has lost some momentum.
62'
GOAL, ARSENAL, HAVERTZ, 0-2! Jorginho intercepts, runs onto an Odegaard pass and despite being in unfamiliar territory, he calmly finds Havertz with a low cross for a tap-in. That should go a long way to killing off the match. Brighton 0-2 Arsenal.
64'
Double SUB, Brighton: Enciso and Moder are replaced by Buonanotte and Joao Pedro.
64'
Double SUB, Arsenal: Saka and Jesus are replaced by Martinelli and Trossard.
67'
Brighton are dominating possession and have the ball in the Arsenal final third. All ten outfield Gunners players are back in their own half... they won't be easy to break down.
70'
Martinelli is working hard. He gets all the way back and blocks a cross from Adingra. Dunk tries a cross from the left, showing how high Brighton are. Raya claims the cross well.
71'
SAVE! Trossard cuts inside from the left and hits a daisy cutter. Verbruggen gets down to push it past the post but he was a bit late to react.
72'
SUB, Arsenal: Tomiyasu replaces Zinchenko.
75'
All this Seagulls possession and they can't create anything. This Arsenal side is incredibly well-drilled.
76'
Yellow card, Brighton: Baleba pulls back Havertz as he makes a run behind the defence. That's a clear caution.
79'
Yellow card, Arsenal: Saliba fouls Estupinan and is cautioned.
79'
SUB, Brighton: Ansu Fati replaces Welbeck.
81'
Arsenal are getting brilliantly here. They've only allowed two shots on target and no 'big chances' at all.
84'
There is very little happening. Brighton are camped in the Arsenal half and are taking risks in their positioning to try to get back into this.
86'
GOAL, ARSENAL, TROSSARD, 0-3! Dunk's loose pass leads to Havertz winning the ball. He sends Trossard through on goal, he shows great pace and dinks the ball over the goalkeeper to score against his former club. Thanks the end of it. Brighton 0-3 Arsenal.
88'
So close! Rice goes alone and shoots from 25 yards and it goes just a yard or so wide of the upright.
89'
Double SUB, Arsenal: Havertz has been excellent and heads off for Nketiah. Vieira takes the place of Odegaard.
90'
FULL TIME. Arsenal win 3-0 and end Brighton's 12 match unbeaten run in the Premier League at home. The Gunners were excellent with goals from Saka (penalty), Havertz and Trossard. They defended incredibly well in the second half and return to the top of the table ahead of Liverpool playing tomorrow. Thanks for joining us. Brighton & Hove Albion 0-3 Arsenal FC.
90'
Yellow card, Arsenal: White is booked for committing one too many offences.
90'
+2' BLOCK! Gabriel throws himself at a Joao Pedro shot to save a goal. He celebrates the block like he scored and Arsenal's fellow defenders and the goalkeeper pat the defender on the back.
90'
Added time: five minutes.
90'
Close! Gabriel has a header saved from a corner and then Nketiah heads over the crossbar. Arteta's side look more likely to make this 4-0 than Brighton are to make it 3-1.
