Kennedy Mweene says "it wasn’t easy" but Mamelodi Sundowns kept their focus to beat Kaizer Chiefs to the 2019/20 Absa Premiership title.
Amakhosi had led the Brazilians by 13 points earlier on in the season but went into the enforced break, as a result of the coronavirus, just four points clear and having played a game more.
On the final day of the season, Chiefs just needed to beat Baroka to win the title, but only managed a 1-1 draw as Sundowns defeated Polokwane City 3-0.
Speaking to the club's official website, Mweene explained why Sundowns were so far behind their title rivals but still managed to claim top honours.
He said: "Look, it wasn't easy, but it’s sweeter because Chiefs were thirteen points ahead of us, we were still busy with the Champions League.
"I think we kept running our own race and we told ourselves to say 'no, there's a lot of football to play and we continue focusing on ourselves'. That’s where we find ourselves, where we are today because of the mental aspect of players."
Mweene added: "It's the mentality of some players, which we have a tendency I think. A lot of players here want to win. They want to make history. They want the other players who join Sundowns at a later stage when they are not around to make it difficult because it won’t be easy to compare Sundowns which are now playing because we are hungrier.
"I think it's only hard work and it's paying off because it's not easy."
